The Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) is a remarkable species of toothed whale within the family Phocoenidae, which is commonly referred to as the porpoise family. Notably, this species is endemic to the Yangtze River in China, making it the country's sole known freshwater cetacean following the likely extinction of the baiji (Lipotes vexillifer).

Physical Characteristics

The Yangtze finless porpoise is distinguished by its lack of a dorsal fin, a characteristic that gives it its name. It possesses a unique, higher and narrower dorsal ridge adorned with 1 to 10 rows of tubercles, in contrast to the Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides), which has a lower, wider ridge with 10 to 25 rows of tubercles. These attributes are key differentiation points among the different species within the genus Neophocaena.

Evolution and Distribution

Genetic studies have indicated that Neophocaena is the most basal living member of the porpoise family, suggesting its early divergence from other porpoise lineages. The Yangtze finless porpoise and the East Asian finless porpoise (Neophocaena sunameri) have had separate reproduction and gene flow for thousands of years, resulting in distinct evolutionary paths. While the East Asian finless porpoise is native to the East China Sea, Yellow Sea, and surrounding waters near Japan, the Yangtze finless porpoise is confined to the freshwater environments of the Yangtze River.
