Williamstown High School, West Virginia
Williamstown High School is a public middle/high school located in Williamstown, a city in Wood County, West Virginia. Nestled along the Ohio River, the school is part of the Parkersburg–Vienna metropolitan area.
Establishment and Development
Originally, the school was established in 1905 following the consolidation of several local schools, including Stapleton, Greenmont, Sand Hill, Pleasant Valley, Vienna, Oak Grove, Summit, Kinnaird, Plum Run, and Oak Lane Schools. The first classes were conducted in two rooms on the second floor of the Henderson Building on Ferry Street. This strategic consolidation aimed to centralize education and resources in the Williamstown area.
Recent Developments
In recent years, Williamstown High School has seen significant developments, including changes in its administration. In 2025, the Wood County Board of Education appointed Jacinda Taylor as assistant principal and athletic director. Previously, she served as the district’s middle school athletic director, showcasing her commitment to local education.
Transition to New Facilities
Significantly, the building that formerly housed Williamstown High School was re-purposed as the new Williamstown Elementary School, serving grades 1-6. This transition highlights the community's adaptive use of educational facilities to meet changing needs. This development followed the closure of the original Williamstown Elementary School for the 2020-2021 school year. At that time, a new Williamstown-Waverly Elementary School was constructed, consolidating students from Williamstown and Waverly Elementary schools, which were feeder schools into Williamstown High School.
Community and Athletic Involvement
Williamstown High School is an integral part of the local community, not only providing education but also participating actively in regional sports and events. The school is part of West Virginia's high school athletic conference, contributing to events such as the West Virginia High School Boys' Soccer State Tournament.
