The company was initially part of AB Volvo until it was sold to the Ford Motor Company in 1999. In 2010, Geely Holding Group, a Chinese multinational, acquired Volvo Cars, which has since focused heavily on sustainability and safety technologies.
The lineup of Volvo Cars includes models like the Volvo V60, a compact executive station wagon, and the Volvo XC40, a subcompact luxury crossover. Volvo Cars is also a pioneer in the production of electric vehicles through its Polestar brand, which it operates with Geely.
Volvo Group
The Volvo Group, officially known as Aktiebolaget Volvo, represents a different facet of the Volvo legacy. This entity specializes in the production of commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, and construction equipment. The Group is renowned for its Volvo Trucks division, a leader in the global heavy-duty truck market.
Beyond trucks, the Volvo Group encompasses divisions such as Volvo Construction Equipment, which manufactures a diverse range of machinery from wheel loaders to hydraulic excavators, and Volvo Buses, providing solutions for public transportation systems around the world. Additionally, the Group was involved in aerospace through its former subsidiary, Volvo Aero.
World of Volvo
The synergy between Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group is celebrated at the World of Volvo, an automotive museum and experience center located in Gothenburg, Sweden. This center, which opened in 2024, serves as a homage to the innovative spirit and rich heritage of both Volvo entities.
