Vijayapura District, also known as Bijapur District, is a prominent region located in the state of Karnataka, India. Known for its rich historical heritage and architectural marvels, Vijayapura is a district steeped in history, having served as a significant center during various empires and dynasties.
The history of Vijayapura dates back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence suggesting that the area was settled as early as the late Paleolithic period. The legendary founding of the city occurred in the late 10th century under Tailapa II, a former governor under the Rashtrakuta Empire. He declared his independence following the decline of Rashtrakuta power, establishing the Chalukyas of Kalyani dynasty. During this era, the city was known as Vijayapura, meaning "City of Victory."
In 1848, the district was annexed to Britain's Bombay Presidency when the last ruler of the Satara territory died without a male heir. Subsequently, the British delineated a new district named Kaladagi, which included present-day Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts.
Vijayapura District is situated in the northern part of Karnataka, approximately 530 kilometers northwest of the state capital, Bengaluru.
