Vijayanagara District

The Vijayanagara District, officially recognized as the 31st district of the Indian state of Karnataka, boasts a rich historical, cultural, and geographical heritage. Formed on November 17, 2021, it was carved out of the Ballari District with Hospet as its administrative headquarters. This district is renowned for being home to Hampi, the erstwhile capital of the illustrious Vijayanagara Empire and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

The historical roots of the Vijayanagara District can be traced back to its time as part of the Bellary District in the newly formed Mysore State after India's independence. In 1953, with the creation of Andhra Pradesh, the region's administrative landscape began to change. Under the leadership of B. S. Yediyurappa in 2020, the Karnataka government approved the reorganization, leading to the establishment of the Vijayanagara District.
