Awards and Recognition of University of Queensland Press
The University of Queensland Press (UQP) has been a notable figure in the Australian publishing scene since its establishment in 1948. This Brisbane-based publishing house has garnered numerous awards and recognitions for its contributions to literature, particularly for promoting Australian literature and Indigenous authors.
David Unaipon Award
One of the most prestigious awards associated with UQP is the David Unaipon Award for an Emerging Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Writer, established in 1988. Named after the legendary Ngarrindjeri author, inventor, and activist, David Unaipon, this award honors his legacy by spotlighting unpublished works by Indigenous authors. It stands as an eminent national award that champions the voices of emerging Indigenous writers. The award's inaugural recipient, van Neerven, gained significant acclaim for their poetry collection "Throat," which achieved numerous accolades, including Book of the Year at the 2021 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards.
Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize
In collaboration with Arts Queensland, UQP also supports the Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize. This prize is an integral part of UQP's efforts to foster poetic talent within Queensland. The prize, named after the celebrated Australian poet Thomas Shapcott, provides a platform for emerging poets and is instrumental in bringing new poetic voices to the forefront of the literary scene.
Val Vallis Award
Further extending its reach within the realm of poetry, UQP has been involved with the Val Vallis Award for poetry. Initially designed and implemented by the then-editor of UQP, this award highlights the works of aspiring poets. Currently, it is administered and managed by Queensland Poetry.
These awards not only recognize literary excellence but also demonstrate UQP's commitment to nurturing new talent and amplifying diverse voices within the literary community.
