Universiti Teknologi Mara
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), formerly known as MARA Technological University or MARA University of Technology, is a prominent public university located in Malaysia. Its main campus is situated in Shah Alam, Selangor. UiTM holds a significant role in the higher education landscape of Malaysia, having been established with the primary aim of advancing the educational opportunities for rural Malays.
The institution began as the RIDA (Rural & Industrial Development Authority) Training Centre (Malay: Dewan Latihan RIDA). The concept of RIDA was inspired by Onn Jaafar, the founder and former president of the United Malays National Organisation. Onn Jaafar's vision was influenced by a study visit he conducted to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1951 to explore its rural development programs.
The training centre commenced operations in 1956, initially enrolling approximately 50 students. The purpose was to provide education and training that would enable rural Malays to partake actively in the country’s economic activities.
The growth trajectory of UiTM has been robust. In August 1999, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, announced the transformation of ITM into a full-fledged university, which was subsequently named Universiti Teknologi MARA. This elevation was part of a broader governmental initiative to enhance the institution’s capacity and resources, thus enabling a more comprehensive educational and research agenda.
UiTM has expanded significantly across Malaysia, establishing multiple branch campuses. Each branch caters to a wide array of academic disciplines and professional training, effectively decentralizing access to education and facilitating regional development. For instance, UiTM Perlis serves the northern region of Malaysia, providing specialized programs tailored to local industry needs.
UiTM has produced numerous notable alumni who have made significant contributions across various sectors. Among them is Syafinaz Selamat, who pursued a bachelor's degree in Music at UiTM and has since become a recognized figure in the Malaysian music industry.
The university offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across disciplines such as engineering, law, business, and the arts. Research is a critical component of UiTM's mission, with efforts directed towards addressing national and global challenges.
UiTM plays a pivotal role in the socio-economic transformation of Malaysia. It is committed to nurturing talent and fostering innovation, contributing to the nation's goal of becoming a high-income economy. The university's efforts align with Malaysia's broader vision for sustainable development and technological advancement.
Through its comprehensive educational programs and dedication to research, Universiti Teknologi MARA continues to be an integral part of Malaysia's educational and developmental framework.
