The United States Capitol Police (USCP) is a federal law enforcement agency responsible for the security and protection of the United States Capitol complex in Washington, D.C.. The agency holds the primary duty of safeguarding the members of the United States Congress, their staff, visitors, and the infrastructure of the Capitol.
Responsibilities and Functions
The USCP is tasked with the protection of life and property, the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal acts, and the enforcement of traffic regulations within the Capitol grounds. Their jurisdiction extends to the Capitol building itself, adjacent congressional buildings, surrounding parks, and thoroughfares.
Historical Incidents
The USCP has been involved in several significant historical events concerning security breaches at the Capitol:

1954 Shooting Incident: This incident involved Puerto Rican nationalists who opened fire from the galleries of the House of Representatives in a bid to promote Puerto Rican independence from the United States.

1998 Capitol Shooting: On July 24, 1998, a gunman named Russell Eugene Weston Jr. entered the Capitol and fatally shot two Capitol Police officers, highlighting potential security vulnerabilities.

2021 Capitol Car Attack: In April 2021, an assailant deliberately rammed his car into a barricade outside the Capitol, resulting in the death of Officer William Evans.

Organizational Structure
The USCP is led by the Capitol Police Board, which includes the Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives, the Sergeant at Arms of the Senate, and the Architect of the Capitol.
