United Nations Economic and Social Council
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN). It is responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization, specifically in relation to the fifteen specialized agencies, the eight functional commissions, and the five regional commissions under its jurisdiction. ECOSOC serves as a central platform for discussing international economic and social issues and formulating policy recommendations addressed to member states and the UN System.
Structure and Membership
ECOSOC has a rotating membership of 54 member states, which are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for three-year terms. The Council's membership reflects geographical diversity to ensure wide representation from various regions. The presidency of the Council is elected annually from the small or medium-sized states represented on the Council, and the position rotates among the United Nations Regional Groups to promote equal representation. For the 2025-26 session, Lok Bahadur Thapa was elected President of ECOSOC.
Functions and Responsibilities
As the lead forum for discussing international economic and social issues, ECOSOC is responsible for:
- Overseeing the work of specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization, International Monetary Fund, and others.
- Cooperating with over 1,600 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that hold consultative status with the Council.
- Coordinating the efforts of the UN's functional commissions, which focus on areas like social development, sustainable development, and human rights.
- Liaising with the UN's regional commissions, such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, to promote regional and subregional cooperation.
Specialized Agencies and Commissions
ECOSOC interacts with several specialized agencies and commissions, which include:
- Functional Commissions: These are dedicated to specific thematic areas, such as the Commission on the Status of Women and the Statistical Commission.
- Regional Commissions: These serve different regions globally, including the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
By overseeing these bodies, ECOSOC plays a pivotal role in the global effort to address complex economic and social challenges, promoting sustainable development and improving living standards worldwide.
