Trinity College, Toronto

Trinity College is a federated college within the University of Toronto, located on its St. George campus in Toronto, Ontario. Established in 1851 by John Strachan, the first Anglican Bishop of Toronto, Trinity College has played a significant role in the academic and cultural development of Toronto.

History

The original Trinity College building opened its doors on January 15, 1852, on Queen Street West. As an independent university, it initially offered degrees in a wide range of faculties, including Arts, Divinity (which remains a focus), Medicine, Law, Music, Dentistry, and Pharmacy.

In 1884, Trinity College admitted its first woman student, and in 1888, it established St. Hilda’s College for women, marking a progressive step in higher education for women at the time.

Federation with the University of Toronto

In 1904, Trinity College federated with the University of Toronto, becoming a part of what is now the Faculty of Arts & Science. Following the federation, Trinity ceased to provide instruction in faculties other than Arts and Divinity, with degrees in Arts being conferred by the University of Toronto. Despite this, the college retained its rights with respect to its Faculty of Divinity.

Academic and Cultural Life

Trinity College has maintained a vibrant academic community and is known for its strong intellectual, social, and religious traditions. The Episkopon society, founded in 1858, is one of its most enigmatic organizations, originally serving as a secret society within the college community.

List of Provosts

Among its distinguished leaders was Andy Orchard, who served as Provost from 2007 to 2013. The role of the Provost is pivotal, acting as the senior academic administrator and chief officer of the college.
