Tour De Yorkshire
The Tour de Yorkshire is a prestigious road cycling race held in the historic county of Yorkshire, England. This event was conceived as a legacy of the successful hosting of the first two stages of the 2014 Tour de France in Yorkshire, an event that sparked widespread enthusiasm for cycling in the region.
The Tour de Yorkshire was first held in May 2015 and quickly rose to prominence in the cycling world, gaining the hors catégorie (HC) status, which is just one tier below the prestigious World Tour status. This rapid ascension in status is considered unprecedented in the cycling community. The race was organised by Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) in collaboration with Welcome to Yorkshire, under the leadership of Sir Gary Verity.
The Tour de Yorkshire is a multi-day stage race that attracts both professional cyclists and enthusiastic spectators. Each year, the course varies, but it consistently showcases Yorkshire's stunning landscapes and challenging terrain. For example, the 2019 edition featured routes such as Doncaster to Selby, Barnsley to Bedale, Bridlington to Scarborough, and Halifax to Leeds, known respectively as The Heritage Stage, The World Stage, The Yorkshire Coast, and The Yorkshire Classic.
In conjunction with the men's race, the Women's Tour de Yorkshire was also established. Initially a one-day race from 2015 to 2017, it expanded to a stage race format from 2018 onwards, reflecting the growing importance and popularity of women's cycling.
Despite its success, the Tour de Yorkshire faced challenges, including the cancellation of the 2021 and 2022 races. These cancellations were due to financial difficulties faced by Welcome to Yorkshire, which went into administration. The rights to the race were later acquired by Silicon Dales, with plans to revive the event for the 10th anniversary of the Yorkshire Grand Depart in 2024.
The 2014 Tour de France played a crucial role in popularizing cycling in Yorkshire. Its stages, particularly from Leeds to Harrogate and York to Sheffield, were colloquially referred to as "Le Tour de Yorkshire," demonstrating the strong cultural and sporting ties between the region and this iconic global event.
The Tour de Yorkshire has cemented the region's reputation as a cycling stronghold, attracting international participants and boosting local tourism. It has become an integral part of Yorkshire's sporting calendar and a celebration of the county's rich heritage and natural beauty.
