Toulouse Metro
The Toulouse Metro is a rapid transit system serving Toulouse Métropole, in the south of France. It is an integral part of the Tisséo network, which also includes the Toulouse tramway and other public transport services in the metropolitan area.
The metro network consists of two primarily underground lines, Line A and Line B, covering a total route length of approximately 28.2 kilometers (17.5 miles) and serving 37 stations. The network was utilized by approximately 110.3 million passengers in 2018, illustrating its significance in the daily commute of Toulouse residents.
Lines and Extensions
Line A
Line A, inaugurated in June 1993, was the first to become operational. It was later expanded to accommodate growing passenger numbers. This line runs in a predominantly east-west direction and is entirely underground, except for the sections where it surfaces near its termini.
Line B
Line B traverses the city in a north-south axis and also remains largely underground. In January 2006, Jean-Luc Moudenc, the then Mayor of Toulouse, advocated for an extension to the south, envisaging an additional 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) of line on a viaduct, which would cross the Canal du Midi and the A61 autoroute. The proposed extension aimed to terminate at Labège - Innopole, although plans were eventually curtailed in favor of developing a third metro line.
Integration with Other Transport Services
The metro is supplemented by a robust railway network, which includes suburban lines such as Arènes-Colomiers, now rebranded to avoid confusion with future metro developments. The Toulouse tramway, comprising Line T1 and T2, extends services to the northwestern suburbs and the Toulouse–Blagnac Airport.
Additionally, the network is connected to the innovative Téléo, an urban Tricable gondola line, enhancing accessibility to areas in the southern part of the city.
Infrastructure
The Toulouse Metro employs a rubber-tyred metro system similar to those found in Lyon and Lille. This design choice facilitates a smoother ride and quieter operations, crucial for a densely populated urban environment.
