The Surfside condominium collapse occurred on June 24, 2021, when a portion of the Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium located in the town of Surfside, Florida, United States, collapsed. This catastrophic structural failure resulted in the deaths of 98 people and is considered one of the deadliest building collapses in U.S. history.
Background
Champlain Towers South was constructed in 1981 and was located at 8777 Collins Avenue, along Florida State Road A1A in the Miami suburb of Surfside, just north of Miami Beach. At the time of the collapse, the building was undergoing its mandatory 40-year recertification process. This process, typical for buildings in the region, involves thorough inspections and necessary repair work to ensure structural and electrical safety.
An engineering firm, Morabito Consultants, had been hired by the condominium association to perform this inspection. In 2018, the firm had noted significant structural damage in a report, highlighting the need for extensive repairs. Roofing repairs were ongoing at the time of the disaster, although further remedial work on the building's concrete had not yet begun.
The Collapse
The collapse occurred at approximately 1:22 a.m. EDT. In the immediate aftermath, emergency services responded rapidly, and rescue operations ensued. Home Front Command, an Israeli defense unit, was among the international teams that arrived to assist with rescue efforts. Despite the rapid response, only four individuals were initially rescued from the rubble, with one succumbing to injuries later at the hospital.

The collapse prompted widespread scrutiny and calls for reforms in building regulations and oversight, both regionally and nationally. The event drew comparisons to other significant structural failures, such as the Hyatt Regency walkway collapse and the Pemberton Mill collapse.
