The festival originated in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1978 under the name the Utah/US Film Festival, with the aim of attracting filmmakers to the state. In 1981, it relocated to nearby Park City and was subsequently renamed the US Film and Video Festival. The name "Sundance Film Festival" was adopted in 1991 in honor of the character Sundance Kid, portrayed by Robert Redford in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
