History
The first Summer Paralympic Games, retroactively known as the 1960 Summer Paralympics, were held in Rome. They evolved from the Stoke Mandeville Games, which were created as a sports competition for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. The success of these initial games led to the establishment of the Paralympics, which have been held approximately every four years since.
Structure and Organization
The Summer Paralympics are held shortly after the corresponding Summer Olympic Games, often using the same facilities. Since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, this scheduling and facility sharing have been a consistent practice.
The event features a wide variety of sports. Some of these are adapted from Olympic sports, while others are unique to the Paralympics. For instance, sports like wheelchair basketball, goalball, and Boccia are specifically designed for Paralympic athletes.
