Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje is the oldest and largest public university in the Republic of North Macedonia. It was officially founded in 1949 and has become an influential educational and research institution in the region. Named in honor of the saints Cyril and Methodius, who were Byzantine brothers renowned for their missionary work among the Slavic peoples, the university is located in the nation’s capital, Skopje.

The university was established shortly after World War II, at a time when the region was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It initially started with three faculties, and its activities were governed by the Law on Higher Education and the university’s own statute.

The Institute of National History was founded in 1948, even before the official establishment of the university. This was followed by the Institute of Folklore in 1949 and the Institute of Economics in 1952.
