Sri Petaling
Sri Petaling, also known as Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, is a vibrant township located in the southern part of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This suburb, with an area covering 620 acres (250 hectares), is nestled within the constituency of Seputeh and is bordered by the towns of Happy Garden, Taman OUG, Kuchai Lama, and Bukit Jalil.
The development of Sri Petaling began in the late 20th century. The township was officially launched in 1977 and was developed by the property development company Petaling Garden Berhad in 1981. Initially, the population was sparse due to its relative distance from the bustling city center of Kuala Lumpur. However, in the late 1980s, as development continued, the population began to grow significantly.
Sri Petaling is known for its excellent connectivity. It is only 15 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur city center, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Damansara, and Puchong. The Sepang International Circuit is just a 25-minute drive away, while Shah Alam is 20 minutes away and the royal town of Klang is 45 minutes away. This connectivity is facilitated by the LRT Ampang Line and the LRT Sri Petaling Line, with the Sri Petaling LRT station serving as a major transit point.
Sri Petaling offers a variety of attractions and amenities. The area is known for its shopping options, with numerous malls and specialty shops. It also offers a range of health and fitness clubs, spas, and gift shops. For those interested in education and recreation, nearby landmarks include Segi University College and Sunway University College.
Sri Petaling gained international attention in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic as it became a hotspot in Southeast Asia. A significant outbreak occurred following a tabligh event held at the Sri Petaling mosque, which was attended by 16,000 people, including 1,500 from abroad. This event was linked to multiple COVID-19 cases across the region, greatly impacting Malaysia.
