It is located approximately 4 kilometers south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District and falls under the jurisdiction of the City of Stonnington and the City of Melbourne. South Yarra is bordered to the north by the Yarra River, which separates it from the suburb of Richmond. To the south, it meets Prahran and Windsor, while Toorak lies to its east. History
South Yarra has a rich history dating back to the 1840s when it became a fashionable retreat for Melbourne’s elite. This era saw the construction of several grand houses and estates, which established the suburb’s reputation for affluence. Notable historic estates include Como House, a key example of 19th-century architecture.
The suburb's prestige continued into the 20th century, maintaining its status as a desirable residential location. The South Yarra Post Office was established in 1854, closed, and then reopened in 1858, marking an important site in the community's development.
