South Padre Island is flanked by the Laguna Madre to the west and the Gulf of Mexico to the east. The island itself is part of a larger system of Texas barrier islands that extends along the coast. North of South Padre Island is North Padre Island, with the two being separated by the Port Mansfield Channel.
