The Solomon Islands is an island country situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It comprises six major islands and over 900 smaller islands, forming part of the greater Melanesian region. Its capital and largest city, Honiara, is located on Guadalcanal, the largest island.
Geography
The Solomon Islands archipelago includes a vast collection of islands, among which the major ones are Guadalcanal, Malaita, Choiseul, New Georgia, and Santa Isabel. The country shares its name with the broader Solomon Islands archipelago. This archipelago also includes the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, which is currently part of Papua New Guinea.
History
The islands have been inhabited since approximately 30,000 to 28,800 BCE, with the Lapita people being among the notable early settlers. In 1568, the Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña became the first European to visit the islands.
In the late 19th century, the British Solomon Islands Protectorate was established. The official name was changed to "The Solomon Islands" in 1975, and the country achieved self-government in 1976. Independence was declared in 1978, and the name was adjusted to "Solomon Islands," omitting the definite article.
Culture
The Solomon Islands has a rich and diverse culture with a significant number of languages spoken, reflective of its numerous ethnic groups and clans. Christianity is the dominant religion, with Anglicanism being one of the largest denominations.
Economy
The economy of the Solomon Islands is primarily based on agriculture, forestry, and fishing. The islands are rich in natural resources, including timber, and there are ongoing efforts to develop the mining sector.
Politics
Solomon Islands is a constitutional monarchy and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The monarch of the United Kingdom remains the head of state, represented by a Governor-General.
Solomon Islands Campaign
The Solomon Islands Campaign was a significant series of battles during World War II. The campaign began with the Japanese occupation of several areas and led to intense battles, most notably the Battle of Guadalcanal, which marked a turning point in the Pacific War.
Flora and Fauna
The islands are home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including the Solomon Islands skink, also known as the prehensile-tailed skink or monkey-tailed skink, which is endemic to the region.
