Simons Town
Simon's Town, also spelled Simonstown, is a charming coastal town located on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. Rich in history and natural beauty, Simon's Town is renowned for its naval heritage and unique tourism attractions.
Established in 1680 as a winter anchorage for the mighty Dutch East India Company, Simon's Town has evolved into a significant maritime center. It holds a special place in South Africa's naval history. The town's Martello Tower serves as a navigational beacon and was white-washed in 1843. Restored in 1972 by the Simon's Town Historical Society and the South African Navy, it now houses a museum, adding to the town's historical allure.
The Simon's Town Museum, housed in a building erected by Governor Joachim van Plettenberg in 1777, chronicles the town's history, capturing the cultural and genealogical aspects of its pre-apartheid inhabitants, including significant collections related to the history of Muslim settlement in the region.
The Simon's Town naval base is a pivotal component of South Africa's maritime defense. Its development began in the early 20th century, with the completion of a drydock named the Selborne Graving Dock, which was inaugurated in 1910. The base was officially handed over to South Africa in 1957 through the Simon's Town Agreement.
The base also serves as a training ground for the navy's frigates and submarines. A notable event in its recent history involved the docking of the Russian cargo ship Lady R in December 2022, which stirred international controversy due to allegations of military supplies being loaded for Russia's use in the Ukraine conflict.
Simon's Town is not only a historical enclave but also a center for tourism. Among its most famous attractions is the colony of African Penguins at Boulders Beach, offering visitors the rare chance to observe penguins in their natural habitat. Another intriguing site is the SAS Assegaai Museum, where visitors can explore South Africa's naval history firsthand.
One of the town's unique landmarks is the grave of Just Nuisance, the only dog to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. A statue commemorating Just Nuisance can be found in Jubilee Square, offering breathtaking views from Red Hill.
Simon’s Town combines a rich tapestry of history, a strategic naval presence, and unique ecological attractions, making it a multifaceted destination in South Africa.
