Siliguri Corridor
The Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the "Chicken's Neck," is a narrow strip of land located in the state of West Bengal in India. This strategically significant corridor serves as the sole terrestrial connection between the Indian mainland and the country's northeastern region, encompassing eight states. Its importance is further underscored by its role in logistical and military movements, supporting over 40 million people.
The Siliguri Corridor is an important chokepoint that is approximately 60 kilometers long and at its narrowest, around 22 kilometers wide. It connects the Indian mainland with the northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Sikkim. The corridor's proximity to international borders adds to its strategic significance, bordering Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. This positioning makes it a pivotal point for both economic trade and national security.
The corridor hosts critical infrastructure, including highways and railways, which facilitate the movement of goods and people. The electrification of the double-track railway is underway with the support of the Central Organization for Railway Electrification. This railway line has been upgraded from a metre-gauge to a broad-gauge line, connecting key towns like Siliguri Junction with Islampur via important locations such as Bagdogra, which is home to the only airport of national interest within the corridor, and towns bordering Nepal, including Adhikari, Galgalia, and Thakurganj.
The Siliguri Corridor's narrow width and geographical constraints make it vulnerable to blockades and security threats, particularly given its proximity to international borders and its significance in connecting the northeastern states to the rest of India. To mitigate these vulnerabilities and enhance connectivity, India is investing in alternative routes. One proposed development is the construction of railway lines through Jogbani in Bihar, extending into Biratnagar in Nepal, and linking to New Mal Junction in West Bengal. This will diversify the logistical pathways and reduce reliance solely on the corridor.
Economically, the corridor facilitates significant trade and transport operations within the northeastern regions of India, and internationally with neighboring countries. Militarily, it is crucial for the mobilization and deployment of troops and resources to the northeastern frontier, which is critical given the ongoing territorial disputes in the region.
The Siliguri Corridor remains a lifeline of immense strategic importance for India, balancing economic growth and national security within its narrow bounds.
