Shiv Sena: An Overview

Shiv Sena, translated as “Army of Shivaji,” is a prominent political party in India, predominantly operating in the state of Maharashtra. The party emerged as a significant force in regional politics since its inception in 1966 and was founded by Bal Thackeray.

Founding and Early Ideology

The Shiv Sena was originally established to advocate for the rights of Marathi people in Maharashtra, emphasizing a pro-Marathi and regionalist ideology. This "sons of the soil" agenda aimed to protect the interests of native Maharashtrians over the influence of migrants from other Indian states.

Shift to Hindutva and Political Alliances

During the 1970s, Shiv Sena began to embrace a broader Hindutva ideology, marking a transition from its original regionalist stance to a more pronounced right-wing populism. This shift facilitated the party's eventual alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a significant player in national politics.

Despite its foundational focus, the party supported the Emergency declared by the Indian National Congress in 1975 and campaigned for Congress in the 1977 general elections. The 1980s saw the Shiv Sena refraining from contesting elections, yet it campaigned for the Congress, further complicating its political associations.

Leadership and Ideological Changes

Following Bal Thackeray, leadership of the Shiv Sena was assumed by his son, Uddhav Thackeray. Under Uddhav, the party saw a departure from its stringent opposition to the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Post the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, Shiv Sena formed an unexpected alliance with these erstwhile rivals to establish government in Maharashtra. This coalition marked a significant ideological shift towards composite nationalism, diverging from the party's traditional path.

The 2022 Split

The year 2022 was pivotal for the Shiv Sena, marked by an internal split. Senior leader Eknath Shinde led a faction of the party to form an alliance with the BJP, resulting in two separate entities: the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction and the Eknath Shinde-led faction. The latter retained the original party name and its iconic "bow and arrow" symbol, while the former adopted a new symbol, the "Mashaal" (Torch).
