Sari, Iran

Sari is a city located in the Central District of Sari County, within the Mazandaran Province of Iran. It serves as the capital of the district, county, and province. Historically, Sari was the former capital of Iran for a brief period. It is situated in the northern part of the country, nestled between the northern slopes of the Alborz Mountains and the southern coast of the Caspian Sea.

Historical Background

During the 7th century, Sari became the capital of Tabaristan, replacing the city of Amol. However, its prominence was diminished due to invasions by successors of the Mongols, including Timur, and incursions by the Uzbeks, Turcomans, and Tatars. These events often resulted in the city being razed to the ground.

The city experienced a resurgence during the reign of Shah Abbas the Great when he established Farahabad as an alternate capital in the north of the city due to his mother, Khayr al-Nisa Begum, being from Behshahr. During his rule, gardens in the region of Ashraf were also developed.

Modern Developments

During the reign of Reza Shah, significant changes were made to the city’s infrastructure, including the construction of the Sari Rail Station and numerous streets and governmental buildings. These developments greatly altered the city landscape.

In the period of the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran, the Soviet Army briefly occupied the city before withdrawing post-war.

Culture and Sports

Sari is home to several sports clubs, including the Moghavemat Sari F.C., which competes in the Iran Football's 2nd Division. Another notable club is Esteghlal Sari F.C., which has participated in various competitions.
