Sacramentals

Sacramentals

A sacramental is a sacred sign or ritual act in Christianity that resembles the sacraments and has spiritual effects. These rites are recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, the Church of the East, the Lutheran Churches, the Old Catholic Church, the Anglican Churches, and Independent Catholic churches. Sacramentals are distinct from sacraments in that they do not confer grace by their own power, but through the intercession of the Church.

Types of Sacramentals

Holy Water

Holy water is water that has been blessed by a member of the clergy. It is commonly used by Christians to recall their baptism and for protection against evil. Holy water is often found in a holy water font near the entrance of churches, where worshippers can dip their fingers and make the sign of the cross.

Blessed Candles

Blessed candles are given to the faithful on Candlemas and are used throughout the year. They may be used in various liturgical celebrations, such as the lighting of the Paschal candle during the Easter Vigil.

Blessed Palms

Blessed palms are distributed on Palm Sunday to commemorate Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Faithful Christians often keep these palms for the year and sometimes burn them to make ashes for Ash Wednesday.

Blessed Ashes

Blessed ashes are imposed on the foreheads of the faithful on Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. The ashes are a sign of penance and a reminder of human mortality.

Cross Necklace

A cross necklace is often blessed by a pastor before it is worn. It serves as a constant reminder of the wearer’s faith and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Headcovering

A headcovering is worn by some Christian women during prayer and worship, following the tradition outlined in 1 Corinthians 11:4-16. It is seen as a sign of modesty and reverence.

Blessed Salt

Blessed salt is used for protection against evil and as a sacramental in various exorcism rituals. It can also be sprinkled in homes for blessings.

Holy Cards

Holy cards are small cards depicting saints, Jesus Christ, or scenes from the Bible. They are often blessed by clergy and carried by the faithful for inspiration and protection.

Christian Art

Christian art, especially the crucifix, serves as a visual reminder of the faith and is often used in personal and communal worship.

Family Bible

A family Bible is often kept on home altars and may be blessed by clergy. It serves as a source of spiritual nourishment through the reading of scripture.

Engagement Rings

When blessed in a betrothal ceremony, engagement rings become a sacramental, symbolizing the couple's commitment to each other under the eyes of God.
