Rubber manufacturing encompasses the processes involved in producing both natural rubber and synthetic rubber. This critical industry supplies the essential materials for a multitude of products ranging from tires to medical devices.

Natural Rubber Production

Natural rubber, also known as India rubber, is primarily harvested from the latex of the Hevea brasiliensis, or rubber tree. Predominantly cultivated in regions with tropical climates, such as Southeast Asia, the process begins with the collection of latex through a method known as tapping.

  1. Tapping: The bark of the rubber tree is carefully sliced to allow latex to flow into collection containers. This latex is an emulsion containing polymers of the organic compound isoprene with water.

  2. Coagulation: The collected latex is then combined with acids, such as formic acid, to induce coagulation, resulting in the formation of solid rubber.

  3. Drying and Smoking: Rubber sheets are dried and sometimes smoked to enhance elasticity and prevent deterioration. The end product is referred to as ribbed smoked sheets.

Synthetic Rubber Manufacturing

Synthetic rubber is produced through the polymerization of monomers derived from petroleum by-products. The control over molecular weight and properties during synthesis allows for the creation of diverse rubber materials.

  1. Monomer Production: Hydrocarbons like oil and coal are refined to produce essential monomers like styrene and butadiene.

  2. Polymerization: These monomers undergo processes such as emulsion polymerization to create synthetic rubbers like styrene-butadiene rubber.

  3. Vulcanization: Both natural and synthetic rubbers are subjected to vulcanization, a process where sulfur or other accelerators are added to improve durability and elasticity. This process was pioneered in the 19th century by Charles Goodyear.

Applications and Industry

The production of rubber is crucial for numerous industries. Companies such as Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, and Cooper Tire & Rubber Company have specialized in manufacturing tires and other rubber goods.

Additionally, foam rubber, known for its cellular structure, is employed in products requiring cushioning and flexibility. The foaming process incorporates agents that create a spongy texture, used extensively in the manufacture of mattresses, cushions, and upholstery.
