Charles Goodyear was born on December 29, 1800, in New Haven, Connecticut. As an American self-taught chemist and manufacturing engineer, he is best known for inventing the process of vulcanization, which revolutionized the rubber industry. Despite numerous setbacks, including financial ruin and imprisonment for debt, his determination to enhance rubber's properties led him to one of the most significant breakthroughs in industrial chemistry.

Before Goodyear's invention, natural rubber was prone to becoming sticky and malleable in warm temperatures and brittle when cold, significantly limiting its utility. Goodyear's quest to improve rubber's properties led him to discover vulcanization in 1839. This process involved heating rubber with sulfur, which transformed it into a more durable and flexible material.
