In 1819, Governor Lewis Cass, along with several companions, embarked on an exploratory mission to highlight the potential of the Michigan Territory, which had been previously described as undesirable and swampy. Their expedition took a positive turn when they arrived at a high ground near the intersections of Main, Rochester, and Crooks Roads. Here, they encountered a majestic oak tree that was notably larger than others in the area. This tree evoked the legend of the Royal Oak tree in England, under which King Charles II sought refuge from enemy forces in 1660. This encounter inspired the naming of the area as "Royal Oak."
