Rodrigo Duterte
Rodrigo Roa Duterte, born on March 28, 1945, in Maasin, Leyte, is a renowned Filipino lawyer and politician who served as the 16th President of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022. He is notably the first president from Mindanao, and at 71, the oldest to assume office. Prior to his presidency, Duterte was the long-serving Mayor of Davao City.
Rodrigo Duterte's family has a substantial history in Philippine politics. His father, Vicente Duterte, was a former mayor of Danao, Cebu and later served as the provincial governor of the undivided Davao province. The Duterte political lineage is extended with his cousin, Ronald Duterte, who served as Mayor of Cebu City from 1983 to 1986. The Dutertes maintain ties with other notable political families, such as the Durano and the Almendras clans.
Duterte's political career is marked by his populist and right-wing nationalist positions. He rose to national prominence through his hardline stance on crime, notably his support for the extrajudicial killings of drug users and criminals. This stance has been a source of both support and significant controversy, particularly concerning human rights issues.
As the Mayor of Davao City for over two decades, Duterte transformed the city into one of the safest in the country, albeit through controversial methods. His policies in Davao became a microcosm of what he would later implement on a national level.
Upon assuming the presidency in 2016, Duterte inherited a robust economy from the administration of Benigno Aquino III. His administration pledged to uphold Aquino's macroeconomic policies while significantly increasing public infrastructure investment through the "Build, Build, Build" program, part of his administration's 10-point socio-economic agenda.
Duterte's campaign included promises to reform labor policies, particularly targeting the practice of "endo" or contractualization, where workers are hired on short-term contracts without regularization. His administration sought to bolster the rights and securities of workers across the nation.
Duterte's presidency was marked by a pivot in international relations, notably his decision to withdraw the Philippines from the International Criminal Court (ICC). This withdrawal followed the ICC's preliminary examination into alleged crimes against humanity during his administration's war on drugs.
In a dramatic turn of events, on March 11, 2025, Duterte was arrested by the Philippine National Police and Interpol following an ICC warrant for his alleged crimes during his presidency. This arrest marked a significant development in ongoing international legal proceedings.
