Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Robert Trent Jones Sr. (June 20, 1906 – June 14, 2000) was a renowned British-American golf course architect known for his extensive work in designing and re-designing more than 500 golf courses across 45 U.S. states and 35 countries. His impact on golf course design is so widespread that he famously remarked, "The sun never sets on a Robert Trent Jones golf course."

Early Life and Career

Jones was born in Ince-in-Makerfield, England and immigrated with his family to Rochester, New York at the age of five. He studied at Cornell University, where he focused on landscape architecture. His work is often confused with that of Bobby Jones, a famous amateur golfer with whom he occasionally collaborated.

Jones's design philosophy emphasized challenging layouts that required strategic thinking from golfers. Among his most notable projects is the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a series of championship-level courses in Alabama.
