Riyadh Metro
The Riyadh Metro is a significant rapid transit system that serves Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia. It was developed as a component of the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport, aiming to enhance urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion in one of the fastest-growing cities in the Middle East.
The development of the Riyadh Metro began in earnest when a shortlist of three global consortia was chosen to spearhead the project in June 2013. Contracts were subsequently awarded in July 2013. The construction officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 4, 2014, under the leadership of Sattam bin Abdulaziz, the then-governor of Riyadh. Currently, the project is overseen by Faisal bin Bandar, the present governor of Riyadh.
The construction was a collaborative effort involving several international and local companies, including Bechtel, Almabani General Contractors, Consolidated Contractors Company, Strukton, Webuild, Larsen & Toubro, Samsung C&T, and Nesma.
The Riyadh Metro consists of six lines designed to integrate seamlessly with the city’s urban fabric:
The Riyadh Metro was inaugurated by King Salman on November 27, 2024. The operations began with the opening of Lines 1, 4, and 6 on December 1, 2024. Subsequent lines, Lines 2 and 5, were opened on December 15, 2024, followed by Line 3 on January 5, 2025.
The introduction of the Riyadh Metro marks a transformative milestone in Riyadh's urban development. It not only facilitates a more efficient transportation network but also supports the broader vision of Saudi Arabia’s urban modernization strategies.
