Rivers State, Nigeria

Rivers State is a prominent state located in the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria. It was officially created on May 27, 1967, when Nigeria's Eastern Region was divided to form new states. Rivers State was notably influenced by the geographical feature of numerous rivers, which is integral to its identity and name.

Historical Background

During the colonial era, the area now known as Rivers State was part of the Oil Rivers Protectorate from 1885 until 1893, after which it became part of the Niger Coast Protectorate. By 1900, this region merged with territories governed by the Royal Niger Company to form the colony of Southern Nigeria.

The desire for a distinct Rivers Province began as early as 1941, leading to the formation of the Ijo Rivers People's League. This movement culminated in the creation of Rivers State under the governance of General Yakubu Gowon, facilitated by Decree No. 14 in 1967. Initially, the state encompassed a larger area until 1996 when Bayelsa State was carved out.
