Abia State
Abia State is a region located in the southeastern part of Nigeria. Established on August 27, 1991, Abia State was carved from the old Imo State under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, a notable figure in Nigerian military history. The state's name, "Abia," is an acronym derived from the initial letters of four of its densely populated regions: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo. Abia State is fondly referred to as "God's Own State," a slogan that highlights its cultural and historical significance.
Geography
Abia State shares its borders with several other states. It is bordered to the west by Imo, to the east by Cross River, to the south by Rivers State, to the northwest by Anambra State, and to the northeast by both Enugu State and Ebonyi State. The state's geography is characterized by the Niger Delta swamp forests in the south and the Cross–Niger transition forests. Two main rivers, the Imo and the Aba Rivers, outline the state's western and southern perimeters, respectively.
History
The historical roots of Abia State can be traced back to the era of the Aro Confederacy, a powerful and influential political and economic union in pre-colonial Nigeria. The confederacy met its decline following the Anglo-Aro War in the early 1900s, when British colonial forces subdued the Aro forces, integrating the area into the broader British colonial framework.

Abia State is comprised of seventeen local government areas (LGAs), with Umuahia serving as the state's capital city. Known for its administrative roles, Umuahia is a central hub of governance in the state.
