Rioja Alavesa
Rioja Alavesa, known in Basque as Arabako Errioxa, is a distinguished wine-producing sub-region located in the southern part of the Basque Country, within the province of Álava. It forms part of the renowned Rioja Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa), one of the most prestigious wine regions in Spain.
The sub-region is uniquely positioned at the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, which form a natural barrier to the north. This geographical positioning provides Rioja Alavesa with a blend of continental and Atlantic climatic influences, making it the coolest among the three Rioja sub-zones. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean introduces cooling effects that are beneficial for grape growing, allowing for a longer maturation period.
The vineyards in Rioja Alavesa are planted at altitudes ranging from 400 to 1,200 meters above sea level, which helps in maintaining moderate acidity and good color in the grapes. This altitude, combined with the fertile, lime-rich soils, produces grapes that are optimal for winemaking.
The dominant grape variety in Rioja Alavesa is Tempranillo, which is often blended with smaller quantities of Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano to produce wines with excellent aging potential. Though primarily known for its red wines, a small amount of white wine is also produced from Viura grapes.
Wines from Rioja Alavesa are renowned for their elegance, rich aromas, and complex flavors. The winemaking tradition in the region is deeply rooted, with many bodegas (wineries) utilizing both traditional methods and modern techniques to maintain and enhance the quality of their wines.
Laguardia is a historic town located within Rioja Alavesa. It is perched on a hill and is notable for its medieval architecture and underground wine cellars, which are a testament to the region's long-standing winemaking history. The town serves as a cultural and social hub for the area.
