Reception And Integration Agency Ireland
The Reception and Integration Agency, commonly abbreviated as RIA, was established by the Irish Government on April 2, 2001. Its primary objective was to manage the reception of asylum seekers into Ireland and provide effective integration services throughout the country. The agency was a key component of Ireland's approach to handling the influx of individuals seeking international protection and ensuring that their basic needs were met during the asylum process through a system known as Direct Provision.
The RIA was tasked with the coordination of various services for asylum seekers, ensuring they had access to accommodation, and facilitating their integration into Irish society. It operated under the aegis of the Department of Justice and Equality, which oversees immigration and asylum matters. The agency worked closely with different departments to mainstream services, allowing residents in state-provided accommodation to access healthcare through the Health Service Executive, education via the Department of Education and Skills, and welfare services through the Department of Social Protection.
The RIA managed multiple accommodation centres across Ireland, most notably the Mosney Accommodation Centre, which was previously a holiday camp. Another significant location was the Mount Trenchard House, an accommodation centre used until its closure.
Integration was a fundamental part of the RIA's mission. The agency aimed to provide support that extended beyond immediate shelter, assisting individuals in becoming active and engaged members of the community. This included facilitating education and employment opportunities, language training, and community engagement programs.
In recent years, the functions of the RIA have been integrated into the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS), which continues to uphold the mission of providing refuge and integration support to asylum seekers in Ireland. The IPAS maintains the agency's commitment to human rights and dignified living conditions for all individuals seeking asylum.
