History and Construction
The construction of Pudu Prison commenced in the year 1891 and was completed in 1895. It was designed to accommodate 600 inmates and was one of the key institutions established during the British colonial era. The prison's location was in the Pudu district, which was a strategic area within Kuala Lumpur, close to what was then Kuala Lumpur's oldest bus station and the bustling Pudu Market.

Pudu Prison Siege
One of the most dramatic events in the history of Pudu Prison was the hostage incident orchestrated by Jimmy Chua Chap Seng, a former police officer, in 1986. The siege lasted six days and involved the taking of hostages, highlighting issues within the Malaysian prison system at the time.
Execution of Barlow and Chambers
The prison also became internationally known due to the detention and execution of Kevin Barlow and Brian Chambers in 1986. The two Australians were convicted of drug trafficking under Malaysian law, and their execution drew significant media attention and diplomatic discussions between Australia and Malaysia.
Botak Chin
Perhaps one of the most infamous inmates, Botak Chin, known for his criminal activities during the 1970s, was held and ultimately executed in Pudu Prison. His story is a reflection of the crime landscape in Malaysia during that era.
Closure and Demolition
In 1996, operations at Pudu Prison were phased out, and the remaining inmates were transferred to the newly opened Sungai Buloh Prison. The closure marked the end of a significant chapter in Kuala Lumpur's history, and by 2010, the prison was completely demolished to make way for the Bukit Bintang City Centre development, a comprehensive urban redevelopment project.
