Kuching Urban Transportation System
The Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) is a transformative infrastructure project aimed at enhancing public transportation in Malaysia, specifically within the state of Sarawak. This ambitious project is designed to cater to the mobility needs of Greater Kuching, including the Samarahan region. The plan involves the development of an Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system, positioning itself as a pioneering effort in the region.
System Overview
The KUTS project comprises a 69.9-kilometre route with three initial rail lines. The network includes a total of 31 stations, with an additional five provisional stations, which will be constructed in stages. Phase 1 of the Blue Line is slated for completion by 2025, with subsequent lines to follow. As of May 2025, the project has achieved a 29.89% completion rate, slightly trailing the intended schedule of 33.86% due to construction delays.
Lines and Stations
The Green Line has recently expanded its number of stations from 10 to 14, increasing the total stations across the KUTS to 35. This expansion is part of the state government's broader initiative to improve connectivity and accessibility within the metropolitan area.
Decision for ART Technology
In September 2019, the government of Sarawak opted for the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) over the initially proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT). The ART system was chosen primarily due to its cost-effectiveness. The state transport minister projected the ART system would be operational by 2022, promising an efficient solution to rising urban mobility demands.
Key Stakeholders
The Premier of Sarawak, Abang Abdul Rahman Johari Abang Openg, has been instrumental in propelling this project forward, aimed at modernizing the state's infrastructure. The initiative involves collaboration with Chinese companies that provide expertise in ART construction and technology implementation.
Sarawak Metro
Sarawak Metro is the entity overseeing the KUTS project, responsible for the execution and management of the state's public transportation assets. This organization plays a crucial role in ensuring that the project's objectives align with the broader strategic goals of economic development and urban planning.
Connectivity and Integration
The ART system is expected to enhance connectivity, linking key urban and suburban areas, including the Kuching International Airport. The integration of these rail lines with existing transportation infrastructure such as Kuching Sentral is crucial for seamless transit experiences, fostering regional growth and economic vibrancy.
