The Primera División RFEF, also known as the Primera Federación, is a prominent tier within the Spanish football league system. Established in 2021, it serves as the third level of competition in Spanish men's football, positioned just below the Segunda División. This league was introduced as part of a significant reorganization of the Spanish football tiers, aiming to provide a more streamlined path for football clubs aspiring to reach the top echelons of Spanish football, namely La Liga.
Formation and Structure
The formation of the Primera División RFEF arose from the restructuring of the previous Segunda División B, which was lowered to the fourth tier and renamed the Segunda División RFEF. This reorganization was implemented by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), the governing body responsible for overseeing football competitions in Spain. The introduction of Primera División RFEF marked a new era for semi-professional football in the country.
This league is divided into two groups, each consisting of 20 teams, making it a 40-team league in total. These teams are drawn from the clubs that either remained from the final Segunda División B season or gained promotion from the lower tiers, notably the Tercera División. The teams in the Primera División RFEF compete for promotion to the Segunda División, with the top teams from each group earning the chance to ascend.
Competitive Format
The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Segunda División and the Segunda División RFEF. At the end of each season, the top team from each group in the Primera División RFEF earns automatic promotion to the Segunda División. Additionally, the teams that finish second to fifth in each group enter a playoff competition to determine the third team to gain promotion.
