Objectives and Features

The primary objective of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is to provide universal access to banking facilities, with at least one basic banking account for every household. Additional objectives include:

  • Financial Inclusion: To ensure access to various financial services like savings accounts, insurance, remittance, credit, and pensions in an affordable manner.
  • Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): To promote the direct transfer of subsidies to the beneficiaries, thereby reducing leakages in the system.
  • Rupay Debit Card: Issuance of Rupay Debit cards with an inbuilt accident insurance cover of INR 100,000.
  • Overdraft Facility: An overdraft facility of up to INR 10,000 is available for one account per household, preferably the lady of the household.

Implementation and Impact

Since its inception, PMJDY has seen substantial implementation across India. As of January 2021, over 417 million accounts had been opened, with a significant portion being active. This initiative has played a crucial role in reducing the poverty rate in India by enabling direct access to financial services.

Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction

The program has been instrumental in moving approximately 171 million Indians out of extreme poverty from 2011 to 2023. The combination of PMJDY's financial inclusion strategies and India's sustained economic growth has contributed significantly to this remarkable achievement.
