Port Harcourt Local Government Area
The Port Harcourt Local Government Area (PHALGA) is one of the 23 local government areas in Rivers State in the southern region of Nigeria. It encompasses a land area that includes the main city of Port Harcourt, which is the capital city of Rivers State and a major urban center in Nigeria.
PHALGA is strategically positioned within the Greater Port Harcourt region, approximately 52 kilometers southeast of Ahoada and about 40 kilometers northwest of Bori. It is bordered by several other local government areas: to the south by Okrika, to the east by Eleme, to the north by Obio-Akpor, and to the west by Degema.
The population of Port Harcourt Local Government Area was recorded at 638,360 in 2011, a significant increase from 538,558 in 2006. As part of the urban expansion, the area's population continues to grow, contributing to Port Harcourt's status as the fourth largest city in Nigeria, with a metropolitan population of approximately 1,865,000 in 2023 as per The World Population Review.
PHALGA hosts numerous educational institutions. Notably, the Rivers State University has its main campus located at Nkpolu Oroworukwo within the local government area. The university is set to relocate to a new site within Greater Port Harcourt, which spans over 524 acres. The area also features various private and public schools, providing educational opportunities for its residents.
The Port Harcourt Local Government Area is part of the Rivers East Senatorial District. It comprises 20 electoral wards, each representing various communities within the local government area.
As a major urban center, PHALGA has a vibrant economy, driven by commerce, education, and various industries. It plays a significant role in the economic activities of Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole.
