Polydor Records
Polydor Records is a notable British record label that operates as an integral part of Universal Music Group. It maintains a symbiotic relationship with Interscope Geffen A&M Records, another entity under the Universal umbrella. This partnership facilitates the distribution of Polydor's releases in the United States, while Polydor manages the distribution of Interscope's releases in the United Kingdom.
The roots of Polydor trace back to 1917 amidst the tumult of World War I. On April 24, 1917, Polyphon-Musikwerke AG acquired the German Deutsche Grammophon-Aktiengesellschaft record plant. This acquisition occurred after the German government seized the British-held Grammophon as enemy property. Originally, Polydor was an independent branch of the Polyphon-Grammophon-Konzern group.
Fast forward to 1954, Polydor Records Ltd. was officially established in London as the British subsidiary of the German company Deutsche Grammophon. In 1972, it was renamed Polydor Ltd.
Polydor Records has been associated with an impressive roster of artists across various musical genres. The label has signed iconic figures such as The Who, 2Pac, and Neil Sedaka. Additionally, artists like Lana Del Rey and Ellie Goulding have released music under the Polydor banner, contributing to its rich legacy in the music industry.
As part of its dynamic portfolio, Polydor also engaged in collaborations with other labels like RSO Records, distributed by Polydor during the mid-1970s. Furthermore, Fiction Records, founded by Polydor A&R man Chris Parry, underscores the label's influence in nurturing new talent and supporting diverse musical expressions.
Polydor's influence is reflected in its ability to adapt and thrive in the evolving landscape of the music industry, maintaining relevance through its strategic partnerships and a diverse artist lineup. Its legacy continues to be celebrated through the timeless music it has helped bring into the world.
