Philippine Basketball Association
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is the premier men's professional basketball league in the Philippines. Founded in 1975, it holds the distinction of being the first professional basketball league in Asia and the second-oldest professional basketball league in the world, following the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Founding and History
The PBA was established when nine teams withdrew from the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA), which was under the control of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP). The league's inception marked the beginning of a new era for basketball in the country, allowing for more autonomy and professional competition. The PBA played its inaugural game on April 9, 1975, at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Structure and Tournaments
The PBA season is divided into three tournaments known as "conferences": the Philippine Cup, which is open exclusively to Filipino players; the Commissioner's Cup, which allows teams to have one foreign player, or "import"; and the Governors' Cup, which also permits one import player but with a height restriction.
Records and Achievements
The league has a rich history of records and achievements. Notable records include the PBA career scoring leaders, the PBA 2,000 Assists Club, the PBA 500 Three-Points Club, the PBA 600 Most Games Club, and the PBA Top 40 Rebounders. These records highlight the individual achievements of players throughout the league's history.
PBA Draft
The PBA Draft is an annual event that has been held since 1985. During the draft, the league's teams select eligible players, primarily from local universities, to join the professional ranks. This event is crucial for the infusion of new talent into the league and maintains a high level of competition.
Hall of Fame
The Philippine Basketball Association Hall of Fame honors former players and personalities who have made significant contributions to the league. Inductees are celebrated not only for their on-court prowess but also for their impact on the sport and its growth in the Philippines.
Related Leagues
In addition to the PBA, the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) was once a prominent semi-professional league in the country. Although it has since become defunct, the PBL played a significant role in developing players who would go on to achieve success in the PBA.
