Malinauskas was born on 14 August 1980 in South Australia to Kathryn (Kate) née May and Peter Malinauskas Jr.. His paternal grandmother, a Hungarian named Eta, survived World War II and later emigrated to Bathurst, New South Wales, escaping the post-war communist regime in Hungary.
Raised in a Catholic family, Malinauskas was educated at Mercedes College, where he demonstrated leadership capabilities through participation in Australian rules football, cricket, and academics. His leadership potential was recognized early on, as he served on the student representative council and became the school captain in his final year.
