Penibaetic System
The Penibaetic System (Spanish: Sistema Penibético), also referred to as the Cordillera Penibética, represents the southernmost collection of mountain ranges within the Baetic System of Spain. It extends approximately 620 kilometers along the Mediterranean Sea coast of Andalusia, from the province of Cádiz to Alicante provinces. The Penibaetic System is a significant topographic feature in the Iberian Peninsula, playing a crucial role in influencing major river basins, such as the Guadalquivir River, and contributing to the region's environmental diversity through its varied elevations and microclimates.
The Penibaetic System is composed of a series of mountain ranges. From west to east, these include the Serranía de Ronda, Sierra de Grazalema, Sierra de Tejeda, Sierra de Almijara, Sierra Nevada, Sierra de la Contraviesa, Sierra de Gádor, Sierra de Baza, and Sierra de los Filabres. It runs parallel to the south coast of Andalusia, extending from the province of Cádiz, through Granada, and into the Region of Murcia until it reaches the Campo de Cartagena.
The Intrabaetic Basin (Spanish: Surco Intrabético), which is a discontinuous series of valleys, separates the Cordillera Penibética from the Cordillera Subbética to the north.
Some of the highest peaks in the Penibaetic System include:
Geologically, the Penibaetic System originated during the Miocene epoch of the Alpine orogeny, which was driven by the oblique convergence between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. This complex geological process resulted in the formation of the varied terrain seen today, characterized by steep ridges and deep valleys.
The Penibaetic System's diverse elevation and geographical location foster a variety of microclimates. The proximity to the Mediterranean Sea influences the coastal areas, while the higher altitudes experience more continental climate patterns, featuring colder temperatures and more precipitation. This diversity supports a wide range of flora and fauna and also makes the region an attractive destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing in the Sierra Nevada.
