Components of the Penang Transport Master Plan
The Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) is a comprehensive transportation strategy designed to transform the state's transportation infrastructure. The PTMP aims to enhance connectivity across Penang, support economic growth, and improve the public transportation system. Herein, we delve into the specific components of the PTMP that are fundamental to its overarching goals.
Urban Rail Transit
Central to the PTMP is the introduction of an urban rail transit system, which includes the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines. One key component is the Mutiara Line, a domestic LRT line that marks an ambitious step in extending rail connectivity beyond the Klang Valley. This line is designed to link critical areas across Penang, thus facilitating smoother intra-city travel.
Highways and Road Infrastructure
To alleviate traffic congestion, the PTMP incorporates several highway projects. These include the Pan Island Link 2A and the Ayer Itam – Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Bypass (Package 2). These projects aim to improve the road network, providing efficient bypass routes around congested urban areas such as George Town.
Penang South Islands
The Penang South Islands (PSI) project is a transformative development under the PTMP. This initiative seeks to convert the southern coast of Penang into a Smart City and a world-class tourist destination. The PSI is designed to foster economic development and accommodate the growing population by creating a sustainable urban environment.
Integration with Existing Infrastructure
Integration with existing infrastructure is vital for the success of the PTMP. The plan aims to seamlessly connect new transport systems with existing networks, enhancing accessibility and reducing travel times. This includes interconnecting the new components like the Mutiara Line with existing transport options and future developments.
Strategic Goals
The PTMP's strategic goals are centered on achieving a public-to-private transport modal share of 40:60. This shift aims to enhance the usage of public transport, reduce road congestion, and contribute to environmental sustainability by lowering emission levels.
Ongoing Projects
Various projects under the PTMP are currently underway. For example, construction on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway - Air Itam bypass has commenced, showing significant progress. These projects are critical to achieving the PTMP's goal of a well-connected transport system.
