Pedro Sánchez

Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón (Pedro Sánchez), born on February 29, 1972, in Madrid, Spain, is a prominent Spanish politician and economist, serving as the Prime Minister of Spain. He has been an influential figure in the Spanish political landscape, particularly as the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

Early Life and Education

Pedro Sánchez was born into a well-off family, with his father, Pedro Sánchez Fernández, and his mother, Magdalena Pérez-Castejón. His educational journey led him to earn a degree in Economics from the Complutense University of Madrid. He furthered his studies with a Master’s degree in European Economic Policy at the Free University of Brussels, and a Master of Public Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Political Career

Sánchez entered politics through co-option, initially being elected to the Spanish Congress of Deputies for the Madrid constituency, replacing the retiring Pedro Solbes, a former Finance Minister under Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. His rise in the ranks of the PSOE saw him becoming the party's Secretary-General in 2014.

Premiership

Pedro Sánchez's path to the premiership began when he was sworn in as Prime Minister by King Felipe VI on June 2, 2018, following a successful vote of no confidence against former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. His leadership marked a period of political upheaval and strategic coalitions, reflecting the fragmented nature of Spanish politics.

Sánchez called a snap general election in July 2023 following significant losses in regional elections in May 2023. Despite PSOE finishing second behind the People's Party in the general election, Sánchez managed to form a coalition government and was appointed to a third term as Prime Minister on November 17, 2023.

Personal Life

Pedro Sánchez married María Begoña Gómez Fernández, a prominent businesswoman, in 2006. She has been actively involved in business outsourcing, and her influence extends to various sectors in Spain. They have two daughters.
