Calculation and Methodology
Surveying for PCI involves a visual inspection of pavement sections to identify and quantify various distress types, such as cracking, potholes, and surface deformations. These distresses are aggregated using a set of formulas to compute the PCI. The calculation accounts for severity and extent of the distresses. Representative samples of pavement sections are usually surveyed, with their results extrapolated to estimate the condition of the entire pavement network.
