Palakkad Kozhikode Greenfield Highway

Palakkad–Kozhikode Greenfield Highway

The Palakkad–Kozhikode Greenfield Highway is a planned infrastructural project in the state of Kerala, India. The proposed highway is a significant component of the Bharatmala project, a nationwide road and highways development initiative aimed at enhancing road connectivity across the country.

This greenfield project entails the construction of a 121-kilometre-long access-controlled highway aimed at substantially reducing travel time between the cities of Palakkad and Kozhikode. Currently, travelers using the existing National Highway 966 endure a four-hour journey. The new highway promises to cut this travel time down to approximately two hours, thereby fostering quicker and more efficient movement between these two key urban centers.

Connectivity and Route

The highway is designed to interconnect two pivotal national highways: National Highway 544 and National Highway 66. It will commence at Marutharode village in Palakkad, linking with NH 544, and extend to Pantheeramkavu in Kozhikode, where it connects to NH 66. This strategic alignment not only facilitates regional travel but also aids in decongesting existing routes by diverting heavy traffic to the new highway.

Significance

The development of the Palakkad–Kozhikode Greenfield Highway is expected to bring multiple benefits:

  • Economic Boost: By improving connectivity, the highway is anticipated to stimulate economic activities in the region. Faster transportation of goods and services can lead to more robust economic ties within Kerala.

  • Traffic Decongestion: The project is aimed at easing congestion on the existing NH 966, which is frequently overwhelmed by vehicular traffic.

  • Enhanced Safety and Infrastructure: As an access-controlled road, the highway will improve travel safety and provide high-quality infrastructure, potentially decreasing the likelihood of traffic accidents.
