P. A. Sangma
Purno Agitok Sangma (1 September 1947 – 4 March 2016) was a notable Indian politician who had a profound influence on the country's political landscape. Born in the village of Chapahati in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya, he emerged from humble beginnings to become a prominent figure in Indian politics.
Political Career
P. A. Sangma commenced his political journey by joining the Indian National Congress, where he served as a Member of the Lok Sabha, representing the Tura constituency of Meghalaya multiple times. His tenure in the Lok Sabha was marked by his appointment as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998, where he was recognized for his impartiality and adherence to democratic principles.
In 1999, P. A. Sangma, along with Sharad Pawar and Tariq Anwar, established the Nationalist Congress Party following a split from the Indian National Congress. This new political entity sought to offer an alternative viewpoint within the Indian polity. However, in 2012, Sangma left the party to run for the Presidency of India, although he was eventually defeated by Pranab Mukherjee.
Recognizing the need for a regional voice in national politics, he founded the National People's Party in 2013, focusing on the issues pertinent to the North-Eastern states of India.
