Operation Vijay 1961
Operation Vijay (1961) was a pivotal military operation carried out by the Indian Armed Forces to liberate the territories of Goa, Daman and Diu, and the Anjediva Islands from Portuguese colonial rule. This operation marked a significant moment in the decolonization of India and was a critical move to integrate these territories into the Indian Union.
The Portuguese had been in control of Goa since the early 16th century, establishing it as a crucial trading hub. Despite India's independence from British rule in 1947, the Portuguese refused to cede control of Goa and its dependencies. Over the years, diplomatic efforts to negotiate a peaceful transfer of power were unsuccessful, leading to growing tensions between India and Portugal.
In the face of diplomatic failure, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and the Minister of Defence Krishna Menon, decided to employ military action to annex these territories. The operation was codenamed "Operation Vijay," which means "Victory" in Sanskrit. The strategy involved a coordinated effort by the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force.
The ground offensive was spearheaded by the 50th Parachute Brigade, supported by other army divisions. They advanced into Goa on December 18, 1961, encountering minimal resistance from the Portuguese forces, which consisted of a relatively small contingent of troops and police.
The naval component played a crucial role in securing maritime control and preventing any Portuguese reinforcements. The INS Vikrant, an aircraft carrier, was part of the naval fleet that ensured dominance over the seas. The Indian Naval Air Arm, equipped with fighter aircraft, provided aerial support to naval and ground operations.
The Indian Air Force conducted operations to secure air superiority, providing cover for the ground troops and supporting naval operations, ensuring minimum resistance from the Portuguese air capabilities.
The operation was swift, concluded within 36 hours on December 19, 1961, with the surrender of Portuguese Governor General Manuel António Vassalo e Silva. The successful conclusion of Operation Vijay led to the integration of Goa, Daman, and Diu into India, marking the end of over 450 years of Portuguese colonial rule.
Operation Vijay is celebrated annually as Goa Liberation Day, commemorating the day when Goa became a part of India. The operation is seen as a testament to the strategic capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces and their commitment to national integration and decolonization.
